Kolkata: A district court in West Midnapore district of West Bengal, on Monday, issued an arrest warrant against Sumit Roy, the executive assistant of Trinamool Congress’ general secretary and the party’s Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee.
The arrest warrant against Roy, who is currently absconding, was issued in the morning by the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate at Medinipur in the district, following an appeal by the West Midnapore District Police.
Sumit Roy is wanted following an FIR registered against him in a case related to illegal land-grabbing at Salboni Police Station under West Midnapore District Police.
In fact, early Sunday morning, a joint team of Salboni Police Station, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Kolkata Police personnel conducted prolonged raid and search operations at the residence of Abhishek Banerjee at Kalighat Road in South Kolkata in search of Roy.
On being denied entry, the security forces had to break the lock at the entrance gate of Abhishek Banerjee’s residence with the help of the State Disaster Management personnel, following which a three-hour raid and search operation was conducted within the residence.
It was learnt that the raid and search operation at Banerjee’s residence was conducted in search of Roy, based on the last tower location of his mobile phone.
State police sources said that when the team from Salboni police station started for Kolkata to track Roy, the tower location showed his mobile phone at Abhishek Banerjee’s residence at Kalighat Road.
The tower location also showed the presence of Roy’s mobile phone at the same place till around 2.30 a.m., that is just 30 minutes before the police personnel reached in front of Abhishek Banerjee’s residence at Kalighat Road.
When the district court on Monday afternoon issued an arrest warrant against Roy, Abhishek Banerjee was at the Enforcement Directorate office in the northern outskirts of Kolkata facing interrogation in connection with the multi-crore cash-for-school-job case.
